The pilgrim's scallop shell, or vieira, is one of the most recognised symbols of the Camino de Santiago. Traditionally tied to the backpack, it identifies those walking towards Santiago de Compostela and connects you to everyone who walked the same route before you.
The meaning of the pilgrim's shell
Carrying it isn't mandatory, but it has a special meaning. Over the centuries, the lines of the shell came to represent the many paths that converge in Santiago: each begins in a different place, and all meet in one. Carrying the shell means, from the very first step, that you are part of that story.
A sign of recognition among pilgrims
Along the way, the shell goes with you in several ways:
- It marks your intention and the start of your journey.
- It identifies you as a pilgrim, because anyone who sees it knows you are heading to Santiago.
- It invites mutual help among everyone walking the Camino.
More than an ornament, it becomes a shared sign of recognition.
Take the pilgrim's shell with you on every stage
Tied to your backpack, your staff or worn around your neck, the shell goes with you from the first kilometre to the last. It is light, durable and easy to carry. When you reach Santiago, it stays with you as a memory of every step: a small symbol with a great story.
